Genre Research: Horror & Comedy
The most common mis-en-scenes in a horror film are closeups, dull lighting and scary music that creates the mood. The close-ups allow you to get the actors full reaction to whatever is happening in the scene. This shot shows the emotion that the director is trying to convey the most. The dull lighting is also common because horror is supposed to be scary. Having limited vision plays a big factor in that when things could be popping up on you left and right. It also plays on the small fear of the dark that most people have. Some popular horror films include The Conjuring, IT and more. We really enjoy the scary music. surprises and backstories aspects of horror films. But we don't like when the stories are based on true stories or when the common plot of that one character following after the weird sound. Continuing on, in comedy films the most common mis-en-scenes are the soundtrack, lighting and makeup. Compared to a horror film, comedies are supposed to be upbeat and bright. That's literally the whole point of watching the film. You're supposed to be able to watch the film and leave feeling weak off laughter. The soundtracks usually are consisted of upbeat, positive music compared to the nitty gritty ones of a horror film. The makeup is usually much more clean, colorful and bright compared to a horror film as well. The same goes with lighting too to make sure the theme of it being lighthearted is set. The element I personally love about a comedy is that it isn't meant to be taken too seriously, it's a little break from the seriousness of the world. There's a joke hidden in almost every corner. There's not much elements about comedy that we could say that we don't like. Maybe the designated "dumb" character in almost all comedy films.
